Fjori Rand Svilfrad
Fjori is pronounced: Fee-ory

Family History and Childhood

Fjori was raised on the high steps of Narfell, the third son of the Chief of the Kedrir Clan. The Kedrir Clan (like most Nar clans) are nomadic tribesmen who pride themselves on their horses and deeds of bravery. Each clan usually consists of fifty or sixty people from five or six families.

The Kedrir clan was wealthy (by Narfell standards) and prosperous. The key to their wealth was a closely guarded secret: Magic Ran strong in their blood.

Chief Havir Svilfrad was strong, intelligent and very charismatic. He excelled at horse trading and bargaining in general. He always seemed to come away on the winning side of any deal he struck. Part of this was due to his natural charm and confidence. What most people did not know was that Havir also had some magical training.

Havir's great-great-great grandfather had married a woman who was not clan. She was a warrior-mage from Mulhorand who had served as a mercenary fighting against the Red Wizards of Thay. Besides infusing the Svilfrad bloodline with magic talent, she also passed along her magical training to her sons and daughters.

Like his father, Havir continued this tradition with his children as well. Unfortunately none of the sons from his first wife showed any aptitude for magic. When she died in childbirth, Havir married again a few years later. This time he chose carefully, marring a woman from the Var tribe who was rumored to have magic bloodlines.

This woman is Fjori's mother: Baora Svilfrad. Fjori is the first child she boar Havir and the only male. The next three were all daughters. As Havir had hoped all showed strong magical talent.

Fjori was the third son (and from Havir Svilfrad's second wife) and was raised in the shadow of his two older brothers (Orid and Hrorald). Both of them were much older than Fjori, having sworn to the tribe before Fjori was even old enough to shoot a bow. In fact, Fjori bonded more with his three sisters than he ever did with his brothers.

This was partly due to the favor Havir showed him and partly due to his own exceptional skills. Even though he was their junior by seven years, he quickly outshone them at horseback riding, hunting and bartering. The Nar's value deeds far more than words or station of birth and Havir was no exception. While he knew that either Orid or Hrorald would succeed him as chief, he could not help but be proud of Fjori. Not only was he amazed at how quickly Fjori and his sisters mastered the lessons of magic he taught them, he was impressed at how Fjori could (as he put it): Sell water to a drowning man.

Tall and lanky in his youth, Fjori not only filled out his frame, but he also grew into his looks. By the age of 16, Fjori was tall, muscular, athletic and extremely good looking. His tan skin, white teeth and pitch black hair combined with his bright red clothing and midnight blue leathers were a striking site that most women found irresistible.

Havir soon began to bring Fjori instead of his brothers to all trading meets, as not only was he an expert horse handler; he also could hold his own in a fight. Of course the fact that Fjori could use magic when necessary also didn't hurt.

Fjori loved the trademeets more than any other aspect of clan life. Here he could talk to travelers and traders from far off lands. No where else could he get cloaks of the brightest red or riding leathers of that midnight blue. Ruby red earrings and a bright blue sapphire for the pommel of his sword, these are the things that Fjori spent his money on. Here also formed the seed of his wanderlust, his desire to travel and see all that the lands outside Narfell held.
